Why Buy Natural or Organic Foods? By Toni Hillebrand
The question of most of the general population is "why buy natural or organic foods?" The main reasons to buy natural foods involve the health and sustainability of our planet. First, natural foods don’t contain chemical additives that can cause health problems from allergies to skin irritations. Natural foods retain more of their nutrients because they’ve undergone less processing. Finally, eating natural foods helps encourage biological diversity, with farmers growing more varied crops in a healthier manner for both humans and environment.
There are numerous reasons for going one step further and buying organic foods. One of the most important of them involves our health! Buying organic foods helps protect future generations, since children currently receive four times more exposure than adults of eight widely used carcinogenic pesticides in food. Additionally, eating organic foods keeps potentially harmful chemical out of your body! The National Academy of Sciences reports that pesticides can add an additional 1.4 million cases of cancer among Americans over our lifetimes. Eating organic also helps protect the farmer’s health, as farmers exposed to herbicides had a six time greater risk than non-farmers of developing cancer (per a study by a Cancer Institute). And finally, organic foods simply taste better than commercially grown foods! Prove it to yourself by sampling an organic peach versus a commercial grown peach.
